All Romance Ebooks (ARe) Closes Site

ebookdownloadSo, the big talk on the internet today, at least with romance writers, has been the closure of the All Romance Ebooks (ARe) website. This morning, a message went up on the site that says:

“It is with a great sadness that we announce the closing of All Romance eBooks, LLC. For the first year since opening in 2006, we will be posting a loss. Despite efforts to maintain and grow our market share, sales and profits have declined. The financial forecast for 2017 isn’t hopeful. We’ve accepted that there is not a viable path forward.

All Romance has always been a labor of love. Over the years we’ve developed wonderful relationships with the vendors we’ve worked with, the publishers whose content it’s been our pleasure to sell, the authors who supported us, and the customers who it’s been our honor to serve. On midnight, December 31 our sites will go dark. Between now and then, we encourage consumers finalize any transactions, download purchases, and back up libraries.

If you directly publish content for sale through our platform or All Romance has acted as your publisher via our Publishing in Partnership program, you should be in receipt of an email from us with additional information. If not, please contact us at”

So, I got an email this morning basically telling me that my royalties for Q4 1016 will be paid $0.10 on the dollar earned. The website is basically trying to avoid bankruptcy fees and is hoping all the authors will help out in this. The email also states that answers to the email to settle accounts and money owed will take priority of answering questions about the whole closing of the site.

It’s sending shock waves through the romance writing community. Speculation of why it is closing down is running rampant. Authors that were published by them will only get their rights reverted back to them, and that is all. In the world of self-publishing and dealing with small presses, this is something to be on the look out for. Who you decide to publish with and how it’s done can matter down the road.

ARe also had been sending me info on promos for Boxing Day and even an email to advertise in 2017, adding a comment that space was filling fast. I have since been really budgeting my money for ads and using mostly Facebook and doing my own promotions. So, I really wasn’t interested in those offers, especially since my books hadn’t really been doing all that well over the last year. Basically, ARe owes me $0.59 or $0.05 if I claim it under the terms they’ve sent me.

What is a take away from this? Watch who you publish with, and really investigate who you self-publish with. Of course, ARe has been considered a very good website in the past. So, this seems a little unexpected. But speculation does center around how it couldn’t keep up with Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program and that the website wasn’t being kept updated with the newest technology. But who is to say what really happened.

I’m about to release my first full novel, Everything For Love, exclusive to Amazon and Kindle Unlimited for the first three months. I’m going to see how it does, and have it go wide if it warrants it later. We’ll have to see. I want to try to see if it does well, but after seeing something like this happen, I’m not hesitant much anymore. It seems like a sound way to release my book to my readers. With the way the ebook industry changes on a dime, this new turn of events could be the start of a new phase, Amazon taking on a bigger share of ereaders.

Here is the link to All Romance Ebooks. It will only work until December 31, 2016. If you’re a reader, you have just a few days to go and download your library to your computer or ereader. It will go dark at midnight Jan. 1, 2017.

Personally, this is kind of a horrible thing to do to writers, but business is business. It’s sad to see a place that specialized in romance ebooks go. Good-bye ARe! It’s been nice knowing ya!

UPDATE 12/29/16: Romance Writers of America has blogged about this as well. They basically think it stinks for the website to be open until Dec. 31 selling books, but will pay royalties up through Dec. 27, and $0.10 on the dollar if you settle.

Here is the link to the blog post:

Plus, here is the email sent to publishers that I got yesterday morning. After reading different blogs and other opinions, I decided it should be posted, as a red flag to retailers or publishers or anyone else that thinks that scaring authors and asking them to sell themselves short is an option. Don’t. This shouldn’t be a precedent set on how to end a retailer business relationship with readers, authors and publishers.

“To Whom It May Concern:

It is with great sadness I announce that we are winding down the operations of All Romance eBooks, LLC. For the first year since opening in 2006, we will be posting a loss. The financial forecast for 2017 isn’t hopeful and we’ve accepted that there is not a viable path forward.
We are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with you. On midnight, December 31, our sites will go dark and your content will cease to be available for sale through our platforms. This includes any content you are having us distribute to Apple. If you wish to inactivate your content sooner, you can do so by logging into your publisher portal.
We will be unable to remit Q4 2016 commissions in full and are proposing a settlement of 10 cents on the dollar (USD) for payments received through 27 December 2016. We also request the following conditions:
1.     That you consider this negotiated settlement to be “paid in full”.
2.     That no further legal action be taken with regards to the above referenced commissions owed.
If you are willing to accept the offered amount and the terms proposed, please hit the reply on this email keeping the history intact. Change the subject to “Publisher Settlement Acceptance” and copy/paste the acceptance statement below into your email, filling in the fields.
Upon receipt of the signed agreement, I will authorize payment of the settlement amount in full by 28 February 2016 via the method stipulated in your publisher account.
It is my sincere hope that we will be able to settle this account and avoid filing for bankruptcy, which would undoubtedly be a prolonged and costl y process.
I appreciate that you may have questions. Unfortunately, we will be operating with limited staff as we prepare for closure. We will do our best to respond to the extent possible and will do so in the order received. Our priority over the next few weeks will be processing settlement requests. At this time, there is no additional information to share.
I thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
Lori James

So there is everything in all of its splendor. I’ll be happy to let you know I didn’t send back an answer to this. I guess I’m just happy I saw the writing on the wall, and published my own books under my publishing account. I’m only losing $0.59. Though, I really feel for the other authors and publishers that worked with All Romance Ebooks. They were a really big romance book store and really brought in an income for some people. They just didn’t work out for my books and now I’m kind of happy about that they didn’t. RIP ARe! You join the many things to die in 2016.
Note also: My books are still available on iTunes, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon. They are officially off of All Romance Ebooks.
To my readers:
Let me know if there are problems downloading books from ARe. I haven’t sold any books there really over the last year. So, I don’t think any of my readers will suffer too much. IF you have problems downloading one of my books from your All Romance library, send me a message with a pic/copy of receipt in your library or take a screen shot. You can still take screen shots from the site until Dec. 31.
I only had three books on there, so all of my box sets were not included on the site. But I’d honor helping you out if you had any of the three novellas in the Beware of Warlocks series. I’m sorry this has happened, and I think everyone is trying to help each other out. It’s nice to see the Romance community, publishers, authors and readers, coming together to make this less painful.
Additional Update: Dec. 30th, 2016
A Facebook Group has been started for those authors wishing to ban together and take legal action against All Romance Ebooks. They are headed by a Florida lawyer. If you’ve lost money, here is the place to find out more info and talk to others with the same issues.
Search in FB groups for: “P*ssed Off (Former) ARe Authors”.
Additional Information: Dec. 31. 2016
This story keeps growing daily. So, I just keep adding updates to the original post. According to BC Blog,  the CEO Lori James, had most likely been planning this for two years. In 2014, Lori James claimed her co-partner and financial manager in ARe, Barbara Perfectti Ulmer to be unfit for duty due to mental disability with the help of a psychicatrist in San Diego. Law suits were filed in relation with Ulmer claiming James was keeping her from operating procedures and information in regards to the site. Basically, Lori James took over at the end of November 2014, making herself CEO and paying herself for the first time a large salary.
I have also gone back and checked my records on the site, gotten copies and downloaded documents of sales records. So far, I don’t see any payments having been made to me. My time selling on the site is Nov. 2o13-Dec. 2016. In all that time, I never got a payment. In fact, I was subtracted money apparently that was “Overpaid” in the Q3 2014 quarter, about the time Lori James took over. Of course, I thought it was because I was supposed to make over $25 before I got paid. As of the sales records I downloaded, ARe owed me $20.03 with the minus of supposed over payment(which I never received, it was just subtracted from my balance), I was owed $14.63. I have the report in Excel form. I’ve been working hard to get as much from the website as I can before everything goes dark tonight.
I’m not sure what will end up happening, but it doesn’t seem that someone that is so unscrupulous with their business partner is really trying to help out the publishers or authors with a $0.10 on the dollar payout. Most blogs and writing board discussions have brought up bankruptcy laws that might even have some creditors(authors) return that amount so they can go back through the assets and redistribute it equally.
So, another take away, we always try to be honest and good in most business transactions. Good business sense lends to that. But there are bad people out there that will just take advantage of a situation pretending to be nice. That’s the time to fight back so others will think twice about it in the future. I think the only way to get through this is to fight back with other authors and publishers, and try to give the message that this is not the way to do business with Indie authors and publishers in the future.
Another side note for today: There is a Google Document Survey up right now that is gathering info for how much money was lost by ARe authors and publishers. Here is the link for you to fill in info or check out results first hand.  I actually went through and added up the totals of money lost so far as of 12/30/16 4pm PST. The total came to: $97,178.13.

UPDATES Continuing: Jan. 1, 2017

All Romance Ebooks and OmniLit are no longer working. But the AReCafe, a site similar to a blog and full of author interviews, reviews, etc., is still up and functioning.

Don’t know what this means. But ads and features are dated from Dec. 28, 2016 in some of the features. So, at least some writers still got their money’s worth for those features. Still keeping an eye on things. I’ve been updating and compiling all the information in updates on my original post. Sorry if it seems messy. But this story grows each day.

UPDATE Jan. 2, 2017

The publishers/authors portal is still working. I just logged into my account, and it all works. You can’t delete files, but can deactivate them. Reports can still be downloaded if you need to back things up.

Everything For Love Not Chosen For Kindle Press! However, it’s Not The End!

Everything For Love will release on January 30, 2017.

So, I’m sorry to announce Everything For Love was not chosen for Kindle Press. But this is not the end of it. This is merely the beginning, because I have a Plan B. I have pretty much self-published everything up to this point. So, I’m moving ahead with that plan. What I got from this KS campaign was the overwhelming feedback that my readers, my people, want to see this book published. So, I will not disappoint you. It is going to happen.

In fact, it is scheduled for release at the end of the month on January 30, 2017. Preorders will go up a few weeks before this date.

I want to thank everyone that nominated this novel for Kindle Press. I can actually let Kindle Scout know when it is self-published, and they will send out emails to everyone that believed in this book. So, all was not in vain. Plus, I will need an ARC team that would be willing to review before it goes on sale. Please contact me through my review copy page here. Everything For Love will come out as a Kindle Unlimited title for the first three months. So, only Kindle ARC or PDF copies will be available for now.

Just check off you’d like a review copy and type in “Everything For Love” in the comment box. I’ll put you on the list for an ARC copy when it is available.

Thank you for all of the support over the last thirty days. I’m excited to finally see this project come to completion so I can work on the second book in the series. 2017 is going to be a great year!

KDrama Drinking Game

kdramasruleSo, those of you that know and follow me probably have seen a lot of my posts about my interest in Korean dramas (Kdramas) and writing fanfiction for them. In fact, I had a Harlequin editor interested in my kdrama fanfiction on Wattpad too. (Of course, I’ve sent in a proposal and I’m still waiting to hear back. Cross your fingers.) But as I’ve been passing time over the last year recovering from my medical issues, I’ve become quite addicted to watching them. It was only natural I would start writing in regards to them, especially since I’ve been exploring with fan fiction. (For those that don’t know, the successful book Fifty Shades of Grey started on Wattpad as Twilight fan fiction.)

So, I was watching my current Kdrama, My Unfortunate Boyfriend, when I started thinking about how many similar tropes there are in most of the Kdramas. Besides having  a lot of romance novel structure, they tend to have some events or tropes that happen in every drama. How much fun would it be to have a list that when watching a Kdrama, you could take a drink every time you saw a trope typical for Kdramas? I thought, hmm, that’s a great idea. Thus, the Kdrama Drinking Game was born.

I’ve listed 10 different tropes that tend to happen in all the Kdramas I’ve watched so far. So, print out the list or have it set on your phone/laptop. Pour your favorite glass of wine or other tasty adult beverage, and watch your Kdrama. Every time you see one of the following 10 things happen in a scene, take a drink. Have fun!

(Note: MC=Main Character)

  1. MC girl rides on the back of the MC boy.
  2. Either MC falls accidentally on top of the other.
  3. Either MC yells or gets mad at the other.
  4. MCs are stuck together in a mysterious house, room, pit, bunker or IE> are trapped together in some way. Bonus Drink: There is a storm going on outside.
  5. MCs have their first kiss.
  6. MCs have any kiss.
  7. MC male lead takes off his shirt and shows off his amazing torso. (Heck, rewind and watch again and have a double.)
  8. MC male lead catches the MC female lead while she falls for any reason. (Fainting and tripping are the biggies. Extra drink if she falls for a reason other than these two.)
  9. Flashback of either MC. Bonus drink: If the flashback is with both MCs together.
  10. Either MC lead cooks for the other.

This is just the list I came up with. I’m sure there are more that can be added. If you think I missed a good one, feel free to write it into the comments section and I can add it onto the master list.

So, now that I’ve got that out of my system, time to get back to my NaNoWriMo 2016 writing. Enjoy your Kdrama! -Marilyn

My 2016 NaNoWriMo Plan

nanowrimo_2016_webbadge_participant-200So, I’m doing National Writing Month (NaNoWriWo) for the third time this year. I have to say, my word count hasn’t been what I had hoped. But then, I didn’t like the push and stress last year to make the 50K. I did win last year, finishing the full 50K on Nov. 29. But it was just to see if I could do it.

This year I’m feeling very different about it. I have gone to the Night of Writing Dangerously for two years in a row. I really enjoyed being with other writers and dressing up to write for the evening. It was a nice outing and a lot of fun. But this year, I feel, been there, done that. It was exciting to be a part of it. Now, I feel I just have to do this writing thing at my own speed. And so, I guess that has been why I have been approaching NaNo differently this year.

There is a lot of stress of pushing for word count daily. And I’ve gotten into a routine of at least one daily writing session of at least an hour a day. I could push to try to do two a day, but the stress got to me a bit last year. I also lost my dear cat right at the end of NaNo last year. So, this year, my heart might not have been fully in it as the last two years.

But I found NaNo has really helped get my word writing speed up and get a writing routine started. I’m finding that the once a day sprints I’m doing is giving me 800-1400 words a day. That seems to be a normal writing speed I’m comfortable with. And it’s good writing that I can use later. I won’t throw it away. I’ll edit the crap out of it, of course, but not throw it away. I’ll even count this blog post word count for NaNo. I count everything I work on this whole month. I usually line up several projects I want to work on or finish. So, it’s a whole month of getting some serious writing done for me. I focus on the creative, first draft writing to get those projects finished I need to.

I really also enjoy sharing the experience with other writers and writing in unison all month. It’s like a whole month where I just do rough drafts. So, it’s almost like a celebration of writing all through November. Where else can writers come together and celebrate and share in something they love to do. All the support, Tweets and memes on Twitter, supportive messages through the website, and seeing my word count go up all month really is a worth while experience to still do. Except I’m going to do it my way this year.

So, if you would like to still join in the NaNo challenge even though it’s Nov. 12, just join up and start writing. Don’t worry about finishing the 50K. Just worry about doing some writing each day, and see what you are able to do by the end of the month. You might surprise yourself.

If you’ve been doing NaNo this year or decide to join in because of my post, please let me know in the comment section. Love to see what word count you are up to.

Currently on Kindle Scout for nomination Nov. 9-Dec. 9, 2016

***Note: My NaNoWriMo Winning Novel from last year is up on Kindle Scout for nominations. I spent a year editing it and getting it ready for this moment. So, I’d appreciate any support and interest you may favor.

Kindle Scout is the program that Amazon has set up to receive possible manuscripts for their ebook imprint: Kindle Press. They get feedback from the public on what novels should be published.

So, please stop by, look over my novel Everything For Love‘s profile, and consider nominating it for publication. It’s a next step you can do after you complete your novel during NaNoWriMo.

Kindle Scout Campaign for Everything For Love Launches Today!

Nominate Everything For Love at Kindle Scout!

Well folks, the only thing making me feel better tonight now that the US Presidential election is over, besides the wine and chocolate, is that my Kindle Scout Campaign just went live on Kindle Scout. This will definitely make your vote count! And I’d so appreciate your support!

I mulled it over, and figured out that Kindle Press is a great fit for me. There is the option to self-publish my print edition, and the push of Amazon marketing if my book is chosen. So, I know a lot of you have been waiting a long time to see this book. Now, you can make it happen. All you need to do is go to the Kindle Scout Website Profile for Everything For Love. While there, you can enjoy the first two chapters of the novel with an on-line excerpt.

If you’re not familiar with Kindle Scout, it took the place of Amazon’s Breakout Novel contest that they held once a year. They changed it over to a monthly submission contest where readers on Amazon and fans of the author can check out the new novel up for submission. Your vote, or nomination, let’s the editors know that there is a demand for the novel. Plus, the turn around is pretty quick. If Everything For Love is picked, it will be published in about two months as an ebook . So, you’ll get your free copy as a nominator as soon as it’s out through Amazon. Not bad? Free copy, and knowing you helped get a book published. Nothing like making your effort count!

Thank you to all  my fans over the last several years for your encouragement and support!

To Launch A Time Travel Romance On Wattpad or Not? Need Feedback!

Cover reveal of Marilyn Vix’s secret Time Travel Novel “Everything For Love”

So, I’m playing around with a wild idea after going over and looking at the Watty Winners. I’ve been looking at one of the winners, Rob Thier, has done with his stories. He’s self-published them on KDP and Smashwords, and is currently a Watty 2016 Winner for his second book in his series. His first book, Storm and Silence, is currently up for a Goodreads Reading award. No small accomplishments for a German guy living in a small village. Incredible and very inspirational really.

So, I have an entire Time Travel Romance novel done. Finished. I’ve been shopping it around, and have been getting rejections. I’m this close to a possible Kindle Scout launch, or maybe posting it Chapter by Chapter on Wattpad over the next several months. It would end with an eventual self-publishing of it on Amazon and possibly Smashwords.

So, not sure where to go with this. It is a lot steamier than I have with my other novel “Saving My Heart” on Wattpad. It would have to be listed 18+ on Wattpad. I would have to check into how to stop it from 13+ from reading. Or might just do Kindle Scout for that reason. I don’t want to edit the steaminess out since it does create the bonding of the characters and move the story forward, as well it should. I mean, it takes place in Victorian Paris and London. And she powers her time machine by sex. So, kind of have to let that stand in the novel.

It’s like 65K. I’ve had some promising interest from two small presses, but had them reject it. So, I’m bringing the conversation to you, my blog readers, what do you think? What would be of interest to you? Please comment below. If there are people that want to read this, and are interested, I would consider send it out now. I’m just trying to decide which is the better option, Kindle Scout or Wattpad. Thank you ahead of time. -Marilyn

Paranormal Romance Blog Tour 2016 Day 2 Behind the Scenes: The Importance of a Cat Muse

prblogtour2016finalWelcome to the second day of the PR blog tour 2016. Last year, I discussed my kitty muse, Samantha. I talked about how much she was a support, joked about her being my kitty editor, and shared how much joy there is in owning a black cat. It is with a heavy heart that I am following that post up with the sad news of Kitty Samantha’s passing.

Samantha in the hospital fighting her kidney failure. It was her heart that gave out in the end.

I know we did everything to keep her going, and she fought the good fight. But in the end, there is something about letting go. I was holding her as she was struggling to breath. When I said, “I’m here, Samantha.” She felt comfortable to let go, and took her last breath. She knew I was with her, and my husband was beside her. We gave her the best life we could, and I will never forget her.

It was the most awful moment. The thing you dread the most with an old cat had happened. December 7, 2015 started with her passing at 7am. I was up all night, but we still drove out to have her cremated and placed in a black cat urn. I was numb for most of December, and celebrated the holidays with little excitement.

That brings me to what happens next. My husband is allergic to cats, and Samantha’s fur seemed to not be as bad. But he did insist on getting a hypoallergenic cat. So, we got ourselves on a list to get a Siberian bred kitten. After 9 months of waiting, we were finally able to pick her out at the end of August. In fact, I think she picked us out. And guess what, she’s a black cat too.

Catherine Zeta Jones picked us. Of all the kittens playing around my husband and I, she was the one that seemed the most interested in us. She kept coming back. I kept thinking, I don’t know if I can have another black cat. It will remind me too much of Samantha. But then I turned, and saw my husband’s face.

He was in love with the little kitten playing in his lap. I would have to try to convince him she wasn’t the right kitten, and to look at some of the others. But then I looked at her. She was a spitfire like my Samantha, except with longer fur and a slightly longer nose. She had spunk. And my husband had already fallen for her. You can’t argue with that.

Catherine Zeta Jones patrolling her inherited cat territory.

So, I have a new cat muse in my life. She runs all over the house, jumps on my laptop when I’m writing, and just ran up a tree today getting sap all in her fur. She is a bundle of joy.

I know when I didn’t have a cat around to write, my craft suffered. It was hard to be creative. I even wrote a cat story with Lynda Belle since I missed having a cat so much. LINK HERE TO A CAT FOR TWO.

Now that I have a cat again, I feel life is back in balance. She’s my little touch stone, and her cute kitten meow warms my heart. It is hard getting used to a kitten after having an old lady cat, but sometimes life is just full of those kind of ups and downs.

Kitten hood happens only once. So, I’m taking lots of pictures, video, and documenting like crazy. My writing is back on track. I’ve submitted a proposal to Harlequin, and I’m starting NaNo with Beware of Vampires, the sequel to the Beware of Warlocks series. Plus, my health is doing better.

There is nothing better than a cat muse. They are a writer’s best tool. After this last year of not having a cat muse, I so understand their power. They calm and support us in ways that are hard to explain. Her purr helps me deal with bad reviews, low sale days, and gets me in the zone to write some more. I guess there is no better editor around than a cat muse. She spurs me on when I feel I can’t give more. Her purr and laying near me is her encouragement to keep going.

But of course, it’s taking a while to train my new cat muse. But then, it’s hard to get a cat to do exactly what you want. I’ll settle for her just being around me. And that can make the difference.
